Canadian Maple Smelling Money

In 2011 new money was released in Canada.  People believe it to smell like maple syrup.  They think it smells good.  I think this is awesome.  Macklemore should right a song about it.  I think this is cool.  Kay still loves noah, not matter WHAT she says.

After a Decade, three missing girls from Cleveland are found

Castro_Bros_mug.jpg

Ten years ago three girls, Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight went missing.  All three were reported as runaways because no abduction was witnessed.  All have been assumed dead ever since.  However, on Monday night, they were rescued.  Ramsey, a nearby neighbor, heard screaming and kicking while he was eating dinner, and when we went to investigate found Berry trying to escape.  He helped her out and she then proceeded to call the police.  At first the police were skeptical, but they eventually were persuaded and the came to the rescue of the three women.  Along with the women was a six year old child of Berry's.  All have been hospitalized and are now physically well.  Their families and friends are all excited and shocked that after ten years their loved ones have shown up alive.
I am so shocked that after ten years, all three of these women have been found alive.  It is awful that they were kept captive for ten years in a well populated area, and yet no neighbors ever thought anything suspicious or felt the need to investigate.  It is truly a miracle that they are all now safe and healthy and with their families once more.

World Record Carp Caught Twice in the Same Week by Two Different Men

big carpjohn thorpe and 99 pounder

When Colin Smith (above left) caught a record breaking Carp (weighing in at about 100lb 8 ou) he though he had seen the last of it when he released it.  However, less then a week later, John Thorpe (above right) caught the same fish. This took place in France, where the World Record at the moment is 75 lb 11 ou.  However, once the board approves it, this fish will break the record.  How do they know it is the same fish?  It is a private small lake, where all the fishers pretty much know the population of the lake, so when this fish was caught, they knew they had caught the same fish.  In fact, records show this same fish had been caught several times over the past years, weighing less however, since it was younger.  It is likely that it should pop up again before it dies.

I think that this is really funny, and an extreme coincidence.  That fish looks really fat, which I don't get since it should get plenty of exercise swimming for a living, but oh well.  I wonder if it ever will show up again before it passes away, if so I certainly want to hear about it.

An angel, sitting among the leaves

Jesus with his arms wide open, welcoming all

Jesus on the cross, dying for our sins

The theme this week was spirituality in three related images.  And so I bring to you, my works of art.  At my church we have a nice little rosary garden which is quite quaint and peaceful.  So I journeyed there and when I arrived it was near sunset, so the lighting is just perfect in some of these.  As I was wandering around, wondering about times long past, I put a lot of effort into making sure this pictures were perfect in everyway.  Though they are not of the same thing, they are all related.  First off, they are all spiritual.  Second, they all depict people whom you would see in Heaven, an angel and Jesus.  Personally, I feel that each of these were a success and I thoroughly enjoyed taking these on the mindless trip I made, that afternoon long ago....

College Athlete Cuts Career Short to save stranger

Cameron Lyle has always been active, he is in his senior year at the University of New Hampshire, and was a star on their track and field team.  Then he got a call.  He was the only match for a man suffering from leukemia, and he was desperate for bone marrow.  Lyle decided right away to donate some, even if it meant an end to his career.  He went through two hours of surgery, with eight cups of bone marrow being removed.  He is not allowed to lift anything heavier then twenty pounds for a couple of weeks, which ends his career of being a thrower on the track and field team.  When asked, he said that he would do it again in a heart beat.  The identity of the person receiving the donations is private, but is said to be doing better, though it will take a few weeks to be certain of improvement.

I think that this is so brave and sweet of Cameron Lyle to do this.  Even though it meant an end of his career, something he had been working on for years, he gave it up in a second to help somebody else out.  It would take somebody really selfless like that to give up your life for a complete stranger.  I hope that he knows that he made the right choice, and that the other person gets better quickly.

Faith Healing Couple's Second Child Dies

Herbert and Catherine Schiable (pictured above) have already been serving a ten year probation since 2009 because of the death of their 2 year old son Kent.  However, just this week their eight month old child died.  They believe in the power of prayer over taking their children in for medical attention.  This is how their first son, Kent, had died of unchecked pnuemonia.  Their baby had had breathing problems for several days before he died, and an autopsy is being waited on to confirm the reason of death.  When Kent had died, part of their juridiction was to seek medical attention if needed for their other seven children, we now see that they failed to keep this promise.  Their fate rests on what the autopsy says.

While I believe that it is extremely important to have faith in God, you still have to do everything possible to keep your loved ones healthy and safe.  This includes taking them to the doctor when they are sick or hurt.  It is awful to read this story and know that they could have done something, but instead stood by and just watched their children die.

Gigantic Wasp Nest

The police received a call from several people on the Canary Islands about a large amount of wasps hanging around their town.  The cops, after being unable to contact the homeowners, break into the abandoned home to find a 21 ft. 9 in. wasp nest.  The large nest indicates that these wasps may have come from Africa, and that it contains millions of wasps.

Personally, I find this beyond gross.  People should keep their houses clean, and call an exterminator if they ever, ever, ever see the beginnings of this.  I just shudder looking at this picture. Ughhhhh!!!!

Two Headed Shark
A radiograph of the two-headed shark. (Photo By Journal of Fish Biology / C. M. Wagner et al)

A fisherman off the coast of the Florida Keys had a shocking suprise when he caught a two-headed bull shark. He kept the shark and shared it with scientists for research.  Though this can happen in animals and humans, this is only one in six recorded cases that this has happened to a shark.  This deformity happens when the egg tries to split in half to form twins, but never splits all of the way, creating a muttation.  According to the scientists, this shark would not have lasted long anyway considering that sharks need to be fast and having two heads would not aid in speed.  Also, most of it's growing energy had gone into having two heads, so the rest of it's body was stunted.
Personally, I think that this is cool, but also sad that the shark had to die.  It is scary to think that two headed sharks exist and are out there in the deep blue sea waiting for their next victims.  I just hope that I never ever ever come across a shark, whether two-headed or not.

A 47-year-old U.S. woman developed a bone disease rarely seen in the U.S. after consuming an excessive amount of tea. An x-ray showed calcifications on ligaments (left) and areas of dense bone on the spinal vertebrae (right).
Too much tea causes skin disease

In Michigan a 47 year old women has developed a rare bone disease after drinking a pitcher of tea (made from 100 tea bags) a day for 17 years.  She started to experience pain in her arms, legs, and back and went into the doctor.  After some x-rays were taken, she was diagnosed with skeletal fluorosis.  Usually, the kidneys are able to take away excess fluoride, but with the amount of intake this women was getting, she had 4 times the amount needed in her body.  She was directed to stop drinking tea and over time her body will heal itself.

Personally, I find this shocking and a little scary since I am a tea drinker myself.  Of course, I only drink a cup or two a day, nowhere near a pitcher, but I still find this interesting considering I had never seen tea as a danger besides the fact that it can turn your teeth yellow.

The theme for the photo of the week this lovely spring week in March, is a protriat in indirect lighting.  I found this beautiful young kenny lady out in the courtyard soacking up some sunshine with her friends.  To take this photo with indirect lighting, I had to make sure that the lighting hit her, so that she was not in the darkness, but also that the light was not overpowering her features.   The lighting hit exactly right, creating a perfect picture that captures the scene of this perfect spring day, here at kenny.

Habemus Papam!
After only five ballots, Bergoglio, archbishop of Buenos Aires, was selected as the new pope.  Supposedly, he came in second last time when Joseph Retzinger was selected as Pope Benedict XVI.  Now, at the age of 76, he is the new pope.  He has selected the name Francis, the first Francis ever to be pope; just like he is the first Latin American pope as well.  He is humble, having 4 brothers and sisters.  He even gave up luxuries that were common to cardinals in Buenos Aires.  He would cook his own meals, and even though he was provided a chaffer, he would sometimes take the bus to work.
I am really excited about the new pope, and to be living through a moment in history.  I pray that everything goes well for him and that he has a long and healthful reign as pope.

Fair Use Quiz

1) Who is copyright status granted to?   Copy right status is only granted to well known authors and filmakers or anyone who is creative to create a legitimate work.

2) What animal does The Motion Picture Association of America use to detect pirated DVD's? Why do they use them?  They use dogs to sniff out the pirated DVD's.

3) Is it legal to purchase a CD or DVD and then resell it on eBay? Why or why not?  It is legal, because there is no harm done is say you do not like the DVD, and then selling it to someone who does.

4) What is the purpose of copyright?  Copyright was founded to promote the art of science and creativity.

5) Paul decides he really likes the work of the photographer that shoots landscape photos. He uploads the photos to his personal website and shares the photographer's photos with anyone who wants them. Is Paul infringing on the photographer's copyright? Why or why not?  Yes, because he is not asking the photographer's permission first, he is just taking them without asking.

6) When is it legal to share a music file that another person holds the copyright on?  It is legal if they give you the permission first, because they are the author.

7) What is Fair Use?  It is a document that states that you can copy an author's work, as long as you cite your source or you get permission.

8) What is Creative Commons licensing?   It is a license that allows you to legally use other people's work.

9) When is it acceptable to use another person's copyrighted works?   It is acceptable as long as you legally use it, such as downloading music off of itunes instead of illegally downloading it off of some other website.

10) If you rent a movie on DVD, you may share it with as many people as you like during the rental period. True or False. Why or why not?  That is not true because only you paid for the DVD, so by sharing it the author is losing money that could be made if each individual person was to rent it.

11) What is Public Domain?  Public domain is free works that are not held under Copyright, so anybody can use them.

12) The US Government holds the copyright on its archives. How does an individual go about obtaining permission to use items from the archives?   You do not need permission, all articles in the government are  Public Domain.

13) Justin downloaded the black-and-white horror classic Night of the Living Dead from the Internet Archive and decided to mix an audio sample from the film into one of his original songs. That's copyright infringement. True or false? Why?  No, it is not because that movie is part of the Public Domain.

14) Paul takes an extremely beautiful landscape photograph. When does his copyright go into effect? How long does it last? If his copyright is infringed upon, how does he defend it?   Copyright goes into effect as soon as the work is in an actual form.  It lasts forever, and if it is infringed upon, he can defend it by taking the case to court.

Current Event #9

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chPanW0QWhA&feature=player_embedded

This week current event is the Cheetah Robot.  A robot has recently been made that can run at 28.3 mph.  Though not as fast as the animal it is named for, it is still faster than the fastest human runner there is.  Though it still needs a supporting arm to help it run, that is just a cink in the process, and once figured out, it will be running on it's own.

I think that this is extremely cool, that we have been making so much development in the technological world.  I cannot wait to see what other inventions will soon come of this.

Current Event #8

The current event that I picked this week was the Caynon Jump.

So, pretty much there are these adrenaline junkie guys who go around, doing extreme stuff, taking videos, and then posting them on their blogs and on youtube.  One of their most recent ones was a 400 ft swing jump into a caynon gouge.  Along with their usual crew, they selected a few of their fans to come along and experience it with them.  Among the fans were a couple, girlfriend and boyfriend.

The boyfriend had already done the jump, and the girlfriend had been contemplating doing it, ultimately deciding not to jump.  There was a repetitent count, upon which she did not jump for any of them.  Her boyfriend then comes up behind her, says hold on, and pushes her off.  As she is falling and swinging away you hear her screaming "I am so breaking up with you".

Afterwards, her boyfriend is rolling on the ground laughing, saying one day she will thank him.  Thankfully, after the 45min climb back up, she had cooled off some.

Ironically, they broke up a few weeks later, though for reasons un-related to the jump.

I think that it is hilarious how her boyfriend pushed her off.  Personally, I would have jumped no matter how scared I was, just to do it, and one day she probably will thank him.  I also find it hilarious how they did break up a few weeks later.

Current Event #7

More and more places these days are banning kids, especially the screamers, from places.  Malaysia Airlines has banned all babies from their first class cabins.  A restuarant in Pittsburg has banned kids under six.  Now the Dee Why Grand Shopping Centre has put up notices of their zero tolerance of screaming children.  If your kid starts screaming, you are kicked out.

Personally, I see this as discrimination.  Coming from a family where I am the oldest of soon to be six kids, I am not new to the whole tantrum and screaming kid show.  Some people may see this as a great thing.  No more screaming kids to contend with.  However, I see this as a great injustice to families with young children.  Families should not be banned from certain places, especially family based areas such as malls and restuarants, just because they happen to have young children.  If a child starts to scream, the parent should walk out with them, but they should at least get that chance to even see if their kid will scream.   I hope that all of these bannings will be revoked in the future.  Who knows what else may come of this, boycotts, rebellions, World War III?  The American Revolution started because our freedom was being denied to us.  Is that not now happening again?  Families banned from going to certain places.  Is it not in our constitution that we all have equal rights???
